Sorry Virginia, Coast Guard didn’t endorse the Socialists Nazi symbol.
Here’s how this all started. The Washington Post reported that the Coast Guard would downgrade swastikas, nooses, and Confederate flags from “hate symbols” to “potentially divisive.” What happened the following day?
Admiral Kevin Lunday, Acting Commandant of the Coast Guard, issued a denial, stating these symbols remain prohibited and policy has not changed.
Here’s the memo that the Coast Yard released. And from this the WP claimed that the Nazi symbol was not offensive.
“The Coast Guard does not tolerate the display of divisive or hate symbols and flags, including those identified with oppression or hatred. These symbols reflect hateful and prohibited conduct that undermines unit cohesion. A symbol or flag is prohibited as a reflection of hate if its display adversely affects good order and discipline, unit cohesion, command climate, morale, or mission effectiveness. This policy applies to all Coast Guard personnel.”
