So, who’s responsible for over 40% of the National debt?

Recently I did this article on my Substack page. I saw an obscure website copied fake news and tried to blame Trump for the large National Debt. Below are the actual facts.

Yes my friends, Barack and Joe ‘s policies and bills past put us in the mess we’re in today. With the U.S. total gross national debt reaching $40.05 trillion, the breakdown of the exact percentages added under the presidential terms of Barack Obama and Joe Biden—based on U.S. Treasury Department data—are outlined below:

Nominal Debt Added by Term

• Barack Obama (Jan 2009 – Jan 2017):
  • Starting Debt: $10.63 trillion
  • Ending Debt: $19.95 trillion
  • Increase: $9.32 trillion
  • Share of Current $40.05T Debt: 23.27%
• Joe Biden (Jan 2021 – Jan 2025):
  • Starting Debt: $27.75 trillion
  • Ending Debt: $36.21 trillion
  • Increase: $8.46 trillion
  • Share of Current $40.05T Debt: 21.12%

Combined Total Percentage

• Obama + Biden Combined Debt Increase: $17.78 trillion ($9.32T + $8.46T)
• Combined Share of Current Debt: 44.39% of the total $40.05 trillion U.S. national debt.
• Now below are Trumps six year totals.
• First Term Non-COVID Debt Growth (3 Years: Jan 2017 – Feb 2020): $3.1 trillion (Gross debt went from $19.95T to $23.1T before COVID stimulus passed).
• Second Term Debt Growth (2 Years: Jan 2025 – Aug 2026): $3.8 trillion (Gross debt expanded from $36.21T at the end of Joe Biden’s term to ~$40.05T).

This $6.9 trillion in direct debt added during non-COVID years accounts for 17.2% of the total $40.05 trillion national debt. Now add the COVID spending that Congress approved.

In closing the 3.6 trillion COVID spending passed with the Democrats support. How much support?

During Donald Trump’s first term, nearly all Democrats in both the House and Senate voted in favor of every major COVID-19 relief bill passed in 2020.

Because the pandemic demanded urgent economic intervention, all three major COVID-19 relief bills passed under Trump were heavily bipartisan:

1. The CARES Act ($2.2 Trillion – March 2020)

• Senate Vote (96–0): Every single Democratic senator present (45 Democrats and 2 Independents who caucused with them) voted YES. Zero voted no.
• House Vote: Passed via voice vote (unanimous agreement without a recorded roll call) after Democratic Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Democratic leadership urged broad bipartisan support.

2. Paycheck Protection Program & Health Care Enhancement Act ($484 Billion – April 2020)

• Senate Vote: Passed by unanimous consent without objection from any senator (including all Democrats).
• House Vote (388–5): 222 Democrats voted YES. Only one Democrat (Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez) voted against it. 

3. Consolidated Appropriations Act / COVID Relief ($900 Billion – December 2020)

• Senate Vote (92–6): 45 Democrats and 2 Independents voted YES. Only two Democrats voted no.
• House Vote (359–53): 203 Democrats voted YES. Only 28 Democrats voted against it.
